The 2021 Juno Awards: Canada’s Music Awards Event Announces Its Second Postponement Due to COVID-19

The 2021 Juno Awards faces yet another postponement after it was already delayed back in December due to COVID-19 related reasons. The event, which was originally scheduled for March was pushed back until May 16th. However, as of April 14th, the event is now postponed further to June 6th.

The Juno Awards is one of Canada’s largest awards events to honor musicians of the past year in their successes in the recording industry. In 2020, the event was originally going to be held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, however due to the onset of the pandemic, it was cancelled. The 2020 Juno Awards was the first cancellation of the event since 1988. Luckily, the awards-winners still received their recognition on June 29th of last year in a virtual event.

The event’s three-week postponement this year is similar to that of the Grammys, one of America’s largest music awards events, which was originally scheduled for January 31st, but was then pushed back six weeks to March 14th. According to the website, the postponement comes “out of an abundance of caution in response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic.” This has been said of many award shows in the past, and based on the success that the Grammy’s had this past year, we can have high hopes for a successful 2021 Juno Awards.

This year's annual event also marks its 50th anniversary, therefore this particular event is going to be quite special. Custom Canadian postage stamps were designed to celebrate the “golden anniversary” by featuring the golden award. The nominees for the awards have also been announced with the list including some well known favorites such as Justin Bieber and JP Saxe, who hold second place for most nominations with 5 nods, and The Weeknd, who leads with six nominations.

The 2021 Juno Awards will be based in Toronto, Canada, and will be broadcast throughout the country on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, and CBC Music. The event will also air globally on CBCMusic.ca/junos, so that fans outside the country can enjoy their favorite artists being honored in what is likely going to be a night of amazing performances, talented artists, and luxurious design. Don’t forget to tune into the show on what will now be June 6th, 2021!
